Inspiring story

Elizabeth Anne Velásquez also known as Lizzie Velásquez is an American who was born on March 13, 1989, in Austin, Texas with a rare condition known as Marfanoid–progeroid–lipodystrophy syndrome—a rare genetic disorder that affects her heart, eyes and bones, and makes it impossible for her to gain weight.

In fact, she has never weighed more than 29 kg (64 lbs) and reportedly has almost 0% body fat. She is also blind in her right eye, and vision-impaired in her left eye. Her conditions resulted in bullying during her childhood.

In 2006, when she was 17 years of age, she was dubbed the ugliest woman in the world after her video appeared on YouTube. Many people bullied her with some advising her to commit suicide because of her looks, can you imagine that!

At first, she was devastated when she learned she had been crowned the ugliest woman in the world but she resolved to stand firm to fight and proof those who think there is no beauty in her wrong. According to the great Chinese philosopher and sage, Confucius, "Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it."

The Ugliest Woman in the World

Does Miss Velásquez really deserve such a deregulatory title? To answer this question we need to consult our dictionary to see what the six letter word “Beauty” means. Also, we will look at how great minds view the word.

The dictionary defines beauty, as the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.

According to Kahil Gibran, “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.” Audrey Hepburn put it this way, “The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole, but true beauty in a Woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she knows.”

Kate Angel stated, “Outer beauty attracts, but inner beauty captivates.” It is true; miss. Velásquez may not have the physical appearance of Scarlett Johansson, the killer hips of Mrs. Kim West or the curves of Mrs. Carter.

But if you scratch a little deeper you will see that they are few people in the world that is as beautiful as this lady. I stand on the dictionary definition of beauty to dare say Mrs. Velasquez is a beauty queen.

Yes, going by the dictionary definition of beauty, it is safe to say that because she possesses sterling qualities that are pleasing to the senses and pleasurably exalt the mind and spirit. Hence, she was able to captivate millions of millions of people.

Beauty is what you are inside it is not something physical. It is what lies inside of us, not what the world sees. Despite her looks, Lizzie Velásquez was able to attract 54 million people on YouTube.

Yes, you heard me right she received 54 million views on YouTube courtesy her inner beauty which has become conspicuous for all to see. Her courage, faith, and determination have indeed won her admirers all over the world.

In fact, this graduate of Texas state university and Roman Catholic has become a sought-after motivational speaker and an inspiration to millions of people in the United States and all over the world.

Through her speeches and life-transforming books, many have discovered their full potential and living out their dream. Remember, there is nothing that can be more beautiful than someone who makes the life of others beautiful……

Elizabeth Anne Velásquez has proven that everyone has a place in the world, everyone is needed irrespective of anything. No matter the position our noise points at, or the size of our head, our talents and abilities make us beautiful!

There is no heart you cannot win if you exercise these gifts. There is a lot to learn from this outstanding woman who took the bricks thrown at her to build a pillar she used to climb to the top.

If we stop to learn from her, we can easily chase away poverty away from our lives, from our world. We can be anything we want to be irrespective of our appearance, ethnicity, family background and the environment in which we function.

Having a beautiful soul and impacting lives is all that matters because at the end history is not going to remember your fine face or the size of your hips but your impact, your works; this is your true beauty.

Here is the truth: one of the reasons relationship/marriage are crashing at an alarming rate today is that we focus too much on the outside, maybe it is because we don’t really know what the word, “beauty” truly means.

One thing you must learn from Elizabeth Ann Velásquez to grow

When Lizzie Velasquez first came across a hurtful YouTube video at age 17 that mocked her as "The World's Ugliest Woman," she was convinced the world was just a mean and hurtful place.

She was devastated and starts to apportion blames and beat herself. This only compounded her problem and made her blood pressure rise. When she realized what she was doing to herself, she chose to view it with a positive mind.

The moment she made that decision, her rise to fame began. Indeed, she acquired the intellectual and mental capacity to turn the situation to her favor. She found herself using the hate to motivate millions of others to beat back the bullies.

Before long, she won the heart of millions of people all over the world and in fact, became a darling to no small number of people. No wonder in one of her interviews she said, “'Ugliest woman' video changed my life for the better.”

One of the major reasons you are still where you are is that you have not started to view your situation with a positive mind. You still look at yourself from a distance that is why it is still difficult for you to see how big you are.

Yes, you cast too many aspersions on your disadvantaged background, little education and failures that is why it has become impossible for you to see the opportunities they hold.

According to Lizzie Velasquez, “We experience challenges in order to learn and grow. We have fears because we’re human, and our life’s work includes working through them, to come to a place of genuine self-acceptance, compassion, and love.”

Any situation you find yourself be grateful, smile... And you will start to see the opportunity which that situation came with.

Today, Lizzie Velasquez has become a sought-after motivational speaker, author of four books, an anti-bullying activist, an inspiration to millions of people worldwide, and is featured in a Lifetime documentary titled "A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story" all because of ugliest woman video.

Hear her, "I feel like I'm walking on cloud nine every day now, to be able to connect with people around the world who are touched by my story and now feel confident to stand up for themselves makes me feel like I'm living out my purpose."

Now you can easily understand why self-made billionaire Larry Ellison said, “I have had all of the disadvantages required for success.”
